How to Prevent (and Treat) Ingrown Hairs After Waxing

If you wax, you've probably met an ingrown hair or two — those little red bumps that show up days after an otherwise perfect appointment. The good news is that ingrowns are largely preventable with the right routine. Here's how we coach our Kissimmee waxing clients to stay smooth between visits.

Why ingrown hairs happen

An ingrown hair occurs when a new hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin instead of out of the follicle, causing a small bump or irritation. People with curly or coarse hair — common across melanin-rich skin — are naturally more prone to them, which makes prevention especially worth the small effort. Many of the same principles the American Academy of Dermatology recommends for preventing razor bumps apply to waxing, too.

How to prevent ingrowns

  • Exfoliate gently 2 to 3 times a week (starting 48 hours after waxing) to keep dead skin from trapping new hairs
  • Moisturize daily — supple skin lets hair surface more easily
  • Don't shave between waxes; it creates blunt, sharp tips that ingrow more easily
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing right after waxing to reduce friction
  • Keep a consistent waxing schedule (every 3 to 4 weeks) so hair stays on the same cycle

How to treat an ingrown you already have

  • Apply a warm compress to soften the skin and calm inflammation
  • Exfoliate gently around it — never dig, squeeze, or use tweezers, which can scar or cause dark spots
  • Let it surface on its own; most resolve within a few days
  • If it's painful, growing, or looks infected, see a professional rather than picking

What to avoid (so you don't make it worse)

Skip aggressive scrubbing on freshly waxed or already-irritated skin, and avoid exfoliating acids on broken skin — both can trigger the inflammation that leads to post-irritation dark marks on deeper skin tones. Gentle and consistent beats harsh and occasional every time.
